Title: Hello from new officer
Post by: Falcon on January 23, 2009, 06:45:01 pm
Hi I'm a noob here and just wanted to say hello.  I just bought a used copy of SFC1 on ebay and can't wait for it to arrive.  The last tactical space game that I played was Cosmic Balance on my C64.  Normally I'm playing the tactical tank battle games.  I'm sure I'll be here often for tips!

Great site!

Just a little late...but welcome to the party!

Tell you what though...you should be looking for SFC:OP (orion pirates)....it's the current version that is played the most...

Many people here have been playing SFC since it came out.... 8)

Welcome to the boards. We are glad to have you join us.

As Crim said, check out the D2 for the SFC2 and OP sections. OR the D3 if you are playing SFC3.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post.

Stephen

Thanks guys but OP seems a bit pricey even on ebay.  I got SFC1 for 8 bucks including shipping.  Maybe the prices will drop by the time SFC1 is played out for me.

Wasn't there also a XP patch for SFC1 at one time? Been awhile since I had to use it. I think Pesty made it. If so might track it down for Falcon to use.

Edit : Link to all SFC1 goodness.  http://www.dynaverse.net/downloads.php?game=SFC%201

Well if that's true then that changes everything.  When I looked on ebay it was at least $45

$45 is what they want for buy it now.  However, its not what they'll get for an 8 year old game that most people don't even know exists.  If you don't want to bid, Amazon has it used for $5.97.

Very interesting, so is that all I need to buy or do I also need SFC2?

Orion Pirates is a "stand-alone expansion" of SFC2. OP has everything that SFC2 has, and you don't need SFC2 at all. The only thing that SFC2 has that OP doesn't is the specialized single player campaign for the empire races, but you can download that for OP anyways.

OK you guys talked me into it, I just ordered it from Amazon, 10 bucks inc shipping.  I guess I wasted 8 bucks on SFC1, maybe I can sell it on ebay or craigslist.  So where do I download the campaign that is missing?

I wouldnt' say that, SFC1's campaign cannot be found in any of the later versions.

I will look for a link for those campaign scripts.

I don't recommend selling SFC1! The single player campaign for SFC1 has you join a special organization for each empire (like the Federation Special Task Force for the feds, the Tal Shiar for the Roms, etc.), and this gave you a whole bunch of unique missions. They really were a lot of fun.

SFC2/OP's campaign is more cookie-cutter, with a lot more generic missions-- you can't join a special ops force, and you don't really get any race-unique missions. Like Tus said, the SFC1 missions were never ported to SFC2 or OP, like the SFC2 were ported to OP.

EAW and OP are much more mulit-player-centric than SFC1, particularly the online dynaverse.  That said, SFC-1 boasts a much better designed single player campaign storyline as well as many spacedock features that are lacking in SFC2.

Falcon, don't give up your copy of SFC1.  Even though it is the oldest of all versions, it is still a fun game.  I don't have it installed right now, but I still got my copy of SFC1.  It doesn't have a few features the other versions have (like Fighters for all races), but it is still a challenging game, and some people still play Multiplayer games on gamespy with it.

Its definitly NOT a waste of 8 bucks for you.   :)

OP is worth every cent. I have spent hundreds of hours playing it and it is still the best game I have ever played.

Ditto that...it's not that SFC1 isnt good...just that it isnt what is played online currently...

My copy of OP arrived without a manual, not even on the CD like with SFC1.  Does anyone have a PDF copy of the manual for OP that they can share?

When I set up SFC1 and OP, I wanted to use the 1280x1024 mode because that is the native res of my 19 inch monitor.  But at that setting the controls on the left of the screen were to small to see so I use the default 800x600 mode.  What mode do others use?  The Federation blue/black scheme is not really great for seeing the buttons.

Personally, i prefer 1024x768 even tho i have a 32 inch monitor and can go higher but your right for my old eyes anything higher is just too dang small.

No PDF, but when you first load the game, go to the options screen, then to hotkeys and you can see the see key controls, or even set new ones.
Just write them down for easy reference until you get to know them.
And then fly the tutorials and it'll tell you how to do most things.
That should give ya the idea.
Then once you're all patched up, come join the Forge on the D2.
