Title: Has anybody had issues running the model viewer.........
Post by: Anthony Scott on February 04, 2009, 01:06:14 am
In Windows Vista or 2000? My laptop runs win 2k and mt desktop runs Vista. both seem to want to view the Model Viewer as a DOS proggie so whenever I run it the DOS or Command Prompt as it is called pops up.

I know that in XP it has to be run in compatibility mode or else one gets an error message when closing it.  I assume Vista has something similar, so try setting it to run in Win 95 compatibility mode.

I've used the model viewer on Windows 2000, and never had problems running it as you've described.

My only problem with model viewer is in XP, cause when I close it it would cause a program error and wouldn't close properly, but that's easily fixed by running it in compatibility mode.

Vista you can try running it in compatibility mode and see if that helps.

Are you running the exe file or shortcut, or are you clicking on a MOD file that's suppose to be associated w/ the model viewer?

I click directly on the .exe and not the link. How do I switch to "compatibility mode"? Never heard of that before. :crazy2:

It sounds like you have a corrupted copy.. I've ran the Modviewer in everything from a W95 machine to Windows 7.. even under Wine on Linux.  It's one of the ones that I use to test Windows installs with.

Here's what I'd do to fix it..

a) Redownload a good copy.
b) Reinstall good copies of all the MS VB dlls (MSVB50 and MSVB60 files in \SYSTEM32)
c) Reinstall MDAC 2.8 on your system

Fire it back up and see where it goes.. :)

And compatibility mode can be found under Properties when you right click on the file.

Thanks, that worked. Looks like the model viewer up at Battleclinic might be faulty.

Not only that, but it REMOVED the copy I had on my computer.  I was looking for it the other day wondering where it had gone to.

Are you using AVG?  If so, you aren't the first to report this problem.  It's probably a false positive caused by a mistake in the virus definition file.  Use an online scanner to check your computer if you're worried or switch to another program.

I'm not worried, I had the program on my computer for months, I have had it on another computer for years.  Neither computer has ever developed performance problems or given me any other indications that its been infected by anything more than a random piece of spyware every once in a while.

There are other model viewers available...

M6's editor
http://www.geocities.com/ccc004/
It uses OpenGL for rendering model. Sometimes crash with fan-made models.

CV 0.7.5
http://www.frost-works.com/stc/conversionversions/CVArchive/CV0.7.5/
Requires DirectX 9 to run. Cannot render SFC1 model with .pcx textures. (just convert .pcx to .bmp and the model will show up.)

You can even download gmax and use it to view .mod models. lol
