I noticed this as I was watching ST:III last night. When the Entrprise is entering Spacedock you can see the Excelsior and another ship on the other side of the mooring to the left.

Well, for a little while it is possible to see one of the original Ralph McQaurrie (I'm pretty sure they're his) study models that were designed for the defunct ST: Phase II TV series, it can be seen in the far left, partly obscured by a piece of the superstructure of the Spacedock. The 2 ships have been identified in the ship graveyard in Reunification and one is believed to be seen in the graveyard in BOBW.
Whoops, just saw the pic: that is DEFINETELY the RQ study model for the Enterprise in Phase II. Oh what could have been...
No wait that model sux
the later Phase II ship that actually looks like the TMP Enterprise would've been cool.

Hmmm, guessing from the nacelle setup and stuff I have seen on the internet, I would say one of the failed Excelsior prototype models.
-
It looked to me like that butt-ugly CVA schematic I saw on here a while ago, except the nacelle's way too close to the dock superstructure to have a saucer. I'll try to find it and post a link...

This is in fact the ship in question it was designed by Ralph McQaurrie (sp?) for the cancelled Phase II trek show. It sucked and they used it as a piece of wreckage in BOBW and Reunification, oh and ofcourse STIII.

Actually according to this page the one in STIII is the second study model while the one in Reunification and BOBW was the first model. I cannae be bothered to retype my whole post so just ignore most of the top bit.
