So, I was thinking of coming back to SFC and was wondering what I'd need and what everyone is doing with the game.
I have SFC:OP & SFC3, which is more played?
What mods are people using?
If I were to play SFC:OP for example, I would want TNG era ship models - which mod would i need?
Dynaverse specifics - what are people playing? Can I join?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
-
Welcome back, we need you! On both Dynaverse and Lamespy, OP is most played. On GSA, Firesoul's 4.0 is still the standard, and I think it is also the shiplist used in the current campaign -- The Forge: Flat Out (I should really sign on once in a while if I don't know).
If you just wanted TNG models you could replace the ship models and play with anyone who was using Firesoul's list or any mod. But for a TNG mod, the only one I know of is the Universe At War mod (http://www.universeatwar.org/)

Oh HELL no..... ;D
Really...that would be cool as hell....I'll never forget the hours we spent on M-player dueling and helping each other hone our skills....
You have been missed brother....(even if you are a son of an ape) ;D
The feds could use another regular...

Bwahahahaaa... I see Crim is still here, obviously because he's got no place better to go!
Yes... Mplayer back in the day - brings back memories, lol.
KK, I'll have to reinstall the game, get whatever mods are necessary for your dynaverse server then ship mods so I can have my beloved TNG-era ships. TOS was before my time, sue me!
The first photon I fire has your name on it Crim... be afraid, be VERY afraid.

Crim what Dynaverse are you playing on? What mods are you using etc? Is there a space open for another fed player in your current campaign?
oh yeah, voice chat. i remember everyone using, Ventrilo I think it was? Still doing that?
EDIT: Another note, I'm running Vista... is that going to be an issue?
-
Ugh...yeah Vista is an issue...it works but stuff is a bit funky yet for Vista...but pestalence came up with a way to duel boot an XP version on a vista machine...Xp works great and the server is pretty solid on it...
We're playing OP as the standard with Firesouls OP+ 4.0
The Forge is the long term server.....there is supposed to be another short "serious" server soon but it hasnt been nailed down yet...there is still an Op lobby on Gamespy....I could meet you there if need be (you know...I think the vista issues are only with a DV server now that I think about..I'll have to read up on it or maybe pesty will chime in..)
We're using the dynaverse teamspeak server now...as I dont think anyone is still on dial up...(I was one of the last)...
I'll try and dig up a few relevent links or you can surf the DV2 forums on how to get set up and stuff...
Once you install and patch you still need a gamespy account and the gamespy updates...
-
Okay... I would prefer not to have to dbl boot or whatever, lol. I've got it installed and I'm dling the patch as we speak 2500-2552. I'll be dling Firesoul but I'm not sure which... there are 2 versions... I'm guessing the mod project?
Ater I install Firesoul, I'm going to find the UAW mod to get TNG era models into my game.

whoa whoa....
too fast...
what you want then is the entire package...with mod switcher and stuff...
Op+ 4.0 is a separate mod....the one that is standard now...
the two versions are models...and no models...
Pesty has a whole package that will do everything...

Alrighty, I"m getting the complete package thing. taking a while to dl, but that's the route I'll go. Then I'll get some new models, haha
-
Kewl...I PM'd pesty and asked him to get with you...
Maybe he can walk you through duel boot....
-
uuuugggghhhhh... dual boots x-(
-
ah I know...maybe there another way now....I havent kept up as much as I should as my laptop is on XP...

OK.. Vista.. there is a current work around now with the new Virtual XP Beta available from MS.. go to the Windows 7 web site and look at the right hand links there.. you will see Virtual XP.. follow the link and the install instructions.. You will have to Install OP to the Virtual XP and then patch, mod, etc.. now this isn't a 100% fix for Dynaverse play, but it does moke the Dynaverse playable again on Vista based machines.. the other work around is to Dual boot your computer with XP to play on the Dynaverse for OP.. Instructions on Dual Booting are available in my post in the engineering section.
Orion Pirates Dynaverse game mode will not work in Native Vista Environment.. map locks up for 2 min whenever the map updates.. as such, the 2 methods to play on Dynaverse are listed above.
Now Orion Pirates played on Vista in Single Player or Gamespy Arcade will work perfectly if you #1, put the game into compatibility mode for XP SP2 or XP SP 3.. and #2 put a check mark into Run as Administrator before installing patches or mods.
SFC 3 works fine on Vista so long as yo put the game into Compatibility mode for XP SP 2 or XPSP 3 and put check mark into Run as Administrator.. all game modes work just fine with a 1 second lag delay with map updates on the Dynaverse.
Hope that this can help ya.
PM me for more detailed instructions if needed.

I have to install it again?!?? God dammit I'm still installing it all now! x-( *sigh*
I'm probably going to do the virtual XP workaround since that seems the easiest. I guess that means I'll have to reinstall everything :-(

LOL...well...your the one who ran off too fast you goober...I was typin with two fingers as fast as I could...
I'm glad there is another work around now...thanks pesty...I'll try and remember that ...

DL page for Virtual XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
where it asks Windows 7 type.. substitute Vista name.. as such Vista 32 bit or Vista 64 bit.. Windows 7 and Vista work on the same core programming.. Windows 7 is basically Vista SP 2.
Hope this helps.

All the help is greatly appreciated. the XP beta thingy is just about dled and then I'll set my virtualization up and get all that going.
Quick questions, I'm installing the mega upgrade right, I obviously don't need anything.
patch to 2552
Firesoul OP+ (both versions)
Mod chooser
EZ INI
is anything the installer installs have to do with TNG models? :D
I don't have to install ALL of the mod choosers right?
-
ACK..I dunno...I never DL'd the package..I do it old school...I'm only set up for OP+
IIRC..the TNG mod is included...
If not..the mod chooser does work good...you just set up another set up and make it TNG...
Then you can choose between them when you want...
Sorry I'm not more help bro...I can barely program a DVDr...

All you need to do is install OP, use my package for OP Enhancement Pack (make sure to follow instructions exactly and read thread for trouble shooting) and then install mod of your choice.. all you listed is already included.
All of the models are based on FASA and TMP.. no tng models..
TNG models will need to be installed manually from what ever source you decide to use.. make sure that you replace the model folder and rename new model to match shiplist entries or you will not see models in game (this means renaming model folder and the .mod files exactly for the currently listed ship in the shiplist.txt..) do not add to the shiplist or ftrlist files as the game will fail crc checks upon entry into Dynaverse and Gamespy Arcade play.
Mod Chooser only backs up art graphics in your textures folder (weapon and shield effects), ship name files, shiplist and ftrlist files..
the slots allow for you to have the original game plus 4 different server mods.. I have the Mod Chooser setting up 2 of the extra slots.. the first one is OP + v4.0 for use on the server "The Forge".. all you need is the script pack (make sure to back up old scripts first) the second shiplist is a GSA Hardcore version of OP + v4.0 (Xenocorp Mod with Tugs and Freighters removed).. yo can cancel this one if you desire.. that will leave you 3 slots for different mods / servers ..
Mod Chooser will not back up models.
There are no TNG materials included in my package.
as for EZ INI.. this allows for additional settings to be adjusted for OP..
Here is a newer version than the one included in the package
-
Ah ok..thank for the clarification...but when using mod chooser...he could install the TNG mod and keep it separate right? *scratches head*
ack....it frickin 4:45 am. here....
*rushes off to bed before the wife wakes up*

Oh... I would have to install Windows 7 RC before I can use virtualization... hrm... how is Windows 7 RC?
-
Wait a tick, you can install a game on the virtual XP? This actually works, has anyone DONE this successfully?
-
Yes.. but the default Virtual Machine sets system memory for XP at 256 MB.. you must reset Virtual XP (right clicking and selecting Settings) berofe launching it to approx 1 to 2 GB for games to work correctly...
As for Windows 7 RC 1, it is very stable.. I have been using Windows 7 since March and the RC 1 for the last 2 weeks.. very stable and much improved over Vista..
as for Mod Chooser and Mods.. as I stated, you can put in a TNG mod if you choose to do so, however the Mod Chooser does not save models, so if a Mod installs and over-wrights models and the Model.siz file, then that could possibly introduce the modes size cheat due to different model sizes between mods.. wo that would be the only file you would have to swap manyally after using Mod Chooser.
I will be testing out Windows 7 and Virtual XP for Orion Pirates tonight.. will post back results. Virtual Xp integrates into Vista for hardware, as such, drivers are not needed like in previous versions of Virtual Machine and IIRC it should not limit video card memory to 8 MB.. I was running 32 bit color with all settings on high last night in Virtual XP.. so I think this issue is solved.. I just need to test Netowrking on Virtual Machine, but once that is done.. I think we should have a winner.

the VM would require direct hardware access, I know VMware won't work. be very interested in seeinf if this does.

Well.. the game launches but is extremely slow.. the game doesn't like virtual CPU or Virtual GPU.. the game works.. but it is like playing in molasys.. let me do some research to see what can be done to improve processor speed and possibly graphic processing.. and maybe a bit better mouse integration.. but this is much improved over VM ware. Networking works properly. (no Dynaverse test so far)
so to Original Poster.. sorry.. currently the only Dynaverse solution until I can get more research done is still Dual Boot the system
-
d'oh... okay, okay. I'll patiently wait for your testing, haha. Hopefully the bugs can be worked out and I can hop back into this game.
*fingers crossed*
