And you're happy about this because?
-
Because it means we're not backwoods! ;D And it's fun to play with. I can show people Halifax landmarks, etc.
-
You do realize that google's spycams have a tendency to catch people in compromising positions, and a few places are trying to get them banned.
-
No one wants to see canada =P

Cameras are everywhere these days. One only need be mindful of it.
edit: e.g. I shield the interac PIN pad from view of store security cameras... nice irony.
-
Cameras may be everywhere, but the embarrassing pictures from most of them aren't going to be posted on the internet for everyone to see.
-
Still, it is in public, one should expect to be seen in public.
I'm more concerned about people that point cellphone cameras around at awkward angles on public transportation. I find that much more disturbing than the thought of street view catching me scratching my arse when I thought no one was looking.
Regardless, I'm glad to have it here. I think it is a good thing. Anybody who is having sex in front of their picture window (as I know that argument is next) wants to be seen. If they don't, they can close their curtains.
Google also publicises the dates and times of their sampling. I think they are showing due diligence in protection of privacy, and the value of the product far outweighs any individual embarrassments.

See? Fun. Besides, all the faces and license plates I came across were nicely blurred out.

the victorian garden would have looked better if taken in mid summer instead of the fall. But you have to take what Googles gives you when the van drives through. Would be nice if they could pass back through a few times in the year to get a blend of looks.

Look around your town and you may find a Google time portal. This one is a 10 month difference between views just by going slightly north-east or south-west on the highway:
<iframe width="425" height="240" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/sv?cbp=12,340.25,,0,8.07&cbll=39.856869,-74.178984&panoid=&v=1&hl=en&gl=us"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Forked+River,+Ocean,+New+Jersey&ll=39.857036,-74.179156&spn=0,359.99717&z=19&layer=c&cbll=39.856869,-74.178984&panoid=fHcI1CgO9K5Vo4qrZ6HlPA&cbp=12,340.25,,0,8.07&source=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>
Ack, how the hell do I get this thing to embed correctly?

Only admins may currently embed html. I wonder if there is a google maps tag plugin for smf like the youtube tag... if not I bet it would not be hard to make one. I'll look at possible solutions for users to embed google maps as well.
I think google did all of our region in one seeason. Not sure though.

Sounds nice until you learn of Googles future plans (http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20091011).
Punisher must be involved.

Thanks Bonk. That was driving me nuts.
That area of town must be in an overlap of two differently scheduled runs of the google van.
