So CCP, the company that makes Eve Online is hosting a contest. Basically it's "Design a ship"
This is my WIP for my entry.
It's intended to be a destroyer. For those who know Eve Online, its basically intended to be the Mini-Brutix. Basically this is to the Brutix as the Vexor is to the Dominix.
C&C welcome as always.
-
At first glance, it reminds me of a whale.
-
I could see that. The Dominix from Eve is very whale like, so it fits.
-
Where are the rules for the contest? Have a link?
-
http://news.deviantart.com/article/128272/
-
Sweet! I really like the shape and proportions! I will have to look into the contest as well, but am intimidated if the likes of FOAS is competing.
-
FOAS, not all play EVE Online (amazingly enough).. any links to what the main Cap ships look like so we can compare?
-
Here's the Brutix

and I'm taking a few queues from the Vexor as well
(http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/7027/vexor.jpg)
-
Seams like there is alot more surface detailing on the Brutix. It adda a knife like quality yours seams to lack at the moment. I that kind of feature indemic to the naval archatecture of the race as a whole or limited to that one class?
-
Well, do remember - this is still a work in progress - so I don't have all the detail down yet. Further, I'm actually thinking about restarting this one with a proper quad-mesh fit for meshsmoothing - an endeavor I've never attempted deeply.
The Gallente are very rounded, but the Brutix (and a couple others) do have that very well sculpted detail. On other vessels there are "blank" smooth spots (usually found on curved surfaces). Most of that detail, however, is achieved via texturing.
-
It truely is an art to get that relief look by using textures to take advantage of every ripple in a plain mesh. You need a really good unwrapping program and quite a bit of talent to pull it off, but I am sure FOAS is up to the challenge.
-
(http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/7360/galwip2.jpg)
I think I'm going to restart. That bulbous thing on the sides just seems slapped on and I think I should integrate that shape into the base of the wings some. I will continue to play :)
-
I like the ship as she is coming along.
-
What until you see version 2.0 :)
-
version 2 progress...
-
I like it without that big wheel thing but kinda miss the rest of that section. Other wise it looks good.
-
I liked the "wheel thing."
-
So did I, but the way I did it wasn't working for me. There will be a wheel thingy but it will be smaller and less obtrusive.
EDIT: well, I HOPE there will be a wheel thing. This thing has taken on a life of its own - it's telling me not to do it >.<
Edit 2: The model and I have come to an agreement - There will be a small wheel in the underchassis. The model just wanted something nice to make it not look so slapdash. We have a reached a compromise. I will enlighten as negotiations continue.
-
Negotiations with the model are proceeding very nicely and both parties remain hopeful of a permanent resolution.
-
It seems the model and I have reached an equitable arrangement. Unwrapping and Texturing to proceed post-haste.
-
Very nice man.
-
That looks really good. Are you going to take advantage of the engines features? Looks like it supports BUMP mapping. :smitten:
-
Maybe. Truth me told I think I'm going to try some Normal mapping with this one, wrap my head around the workflow of that particular can of beans.
-
If you are going the way you are with your model then normal mapping is a breeze just use the nvidia dds software
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html
I think it is only supported for adobe Ps though.
But all you do is draw your bump map. BLACK -> WHITE to show relief and GRAY'S in between elements and then use that plug in to convert it to a bump map.
-
Nope.
I'm doing something a little more extreme.
There will be three versions of this model: Low-Res, High-Res, and Uber-Res. The Low-Res is just the model with no Turbosmoothing. The High-Res is going to be a turbosmoothed version. The Uber-Res will have a 2-iteration turbosmooth that I will then add even more detail to. The Uber-Res will be used to make normal maps for the other two :)
-
Ahhh cool, so your gonna use projection mapping, using the higher poly model to provide the bump maps for the lower version. Its definitely the best way to do it and not "cheap".
Show progress where you can please.
-
That's the plan.
First things first, though - Unwrapping. I just came down with a cold, too :-/
-
Unwrapping is complete. Markyd was right - Unified meshes are easier to unwrap.
-
That was quick. looks really well done too.
-
Great work there mate, When are you going to start on the higher poly model?
-
And we continue.
I'm actually thinking of ditching the higher-res model - I'm getting more than enough detail via textures.
-
Looking good. She needs a bit more pannleing effect over the large gray area but the texture is still WIP right ;)
-
Very much a WIP, yes, lol
-
So I finished her and started on my second entry:

-
Now that sir kicks ass :D
-
Looks just like the ships from the game, with the same style and textures...
...bastard.
:coolsmiley:
-
:-D
-
Sexy!!!
-
WOW! Awesome! They look like they fit perfectly!
Once the contest is over, will you release these to your adoring public?
Is the Brutix your model, or did you rip it from the game?
-
If I don't win first place, I have no problem releasing it. If I DO win first place, then CCP adds it to the game.
The Brutix is not my model, but one I ripped from the game for comparison's sake.
-
I hope you win.
-
Lol, me too; I could use the prize money.
-
That looks so clean and well made. I love it :smitten:
-
I hope you win.
Yea thats great work.
-
Nice work FoaS.
-
Thanks, bonk :)
I had to reformat today - All the files are fine, but it is going to be a few days before I get max reinstalled and where I like to have it.
-
Thats some super work mate. Nicely done.

From what i see just apply for a job dude dont glory it get the $. If you have the skills dont waist your time on free crap or guest work get that job. If your looking for it that is. Anyhow - Beautifull
work
-
The only office CCP has in america is in Georgia - a bit of a commute for me :-/
-
FoaS,
You should apply anyways, it doesn't hurt. If they deside to interveiw you it will be they will fly you down or some one up once you pass the intial stages. Moving you to their location will be part of the arrangement oif yopu are hired. So i would say at least check it out before you decide to pass it by.
You can always say no, but include why.
Be it from money, family reason whatever, there are plenty of companies that will allow you to work from home and just have to travel to the office once a month or so. If all else fails they might use you free lance and cover you for some expense at new software.
-
So, the contest is over (mostly) and the semi-finalists have been chosen. I did not make the cut, which is fine. However, the stuff that did make the cut is absolute crap.
-
that sucks
-
Meh, it happens.
It's just funny that both the dA community AND the eve community is flaming out the dA staff because of their poor choices in the semi-finalists.
-
It seems as if the Eve community is in an uproar over the semi-finalists.... I've been tracking the entire event all night. Quite impressive.
-
Were there pics that bad?
-
Some of them were pretty decent, but none of the original 15 fit into the design motif of Eve online. When the community had an uproar on one of the entries, which didn't meet technical specifications (and frankly was the worst), the judges took it down and put up a new 15th entry. The problem with this is that the 15th entry is an obvious appeasement. It was much better than any of the 15 previously posted and was cited multiple times by the people who were objecting as "the best one in the entire contest".
I am thinking that the the deviantArt people really had no idea what they were judging, from an in-universe view, and just picked what they thought were pretty, with total ignorance to what the game looked or felt like. Now that they've dug their grave, however, they have to lie in it - and the Eve people (and quite a few on deviantArt) are up in arms about it.
-
Continuity, it will get you every time :knuppel2:
-
A quick render I did. I still feel like my renders lack a certain realism.
You should really view the full-sized on for full effect.
-
Okay, the drive that is holding all my models, textures, utilities, collections has just started to fail. I'm running a batch-driven backup as we speak. If you know any good prayers for the computer gods, now is the time.
-
Angels and ministers of RAM defend FoaS on his journey to save two of every model before the great flood of hardware failure descends upon him.
-Wickedous, 10:23
-
Thanks WZ.
The copy over went fine, in fact not a single error occured, according to the log file (dunno if i logged it right, though).
-
Harddrive is still under warranty, so It's being sent back. I'll either get a 500gb or a 750gb drive in return (quite an upgrade from this 250gb). The good news is that if I have my USB 1tb drive plugged in I can continue work.
-
I may have spoken too soon. The data is all fine, but 3ds Max isn't coming up.
-
I flipped through a lot of the entries. In my opinion, yours is definitely in the top five. It may be that it fit just too well with the theme. For some reason, people tend to like a departure from standard designs. Star Trek examples include Defiant and Delta flier.
-
A quick render I did. I still feel like my renders lack a certain realism.
Well the main thing notice is too much ambiant light. It is washing out all the shading. Got som crude examples running from 100% ambiant to 0%.
-
Many thanks,
I think mine was good, but I think that there are many more that are better. Furthermore, I think that there are many better designs in the contest than the semi-finalists that actually fit into the universe.
Starfox,
I was attempting to make it look like you were looking at ships through the haze of a nebula - I will try without the depthed haze, though - hang on.
EDIT: I didn't make these in the game, I rendered them in 3ds Max.
-
Okay, compare these two shots, if you please.
Without nebula haze
(http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/9713/reconnoneb.jpg)
With nebula haze
(http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/7130/reconyesneb.jpg)
-
The blur is a bit funky, doesn't seem to mesh for some reason
-
Its not really the haze; though giving that an irregular density would help. Its how you ar lighting the ships. It lacks directionality. It looks like its coming from everywhere too me. of cours that could be from the head on nature of the light souce. try changing the angle.
-
Blur-less version with no nebula haze

Blur-less version with nebula haze
(http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/4602/reconplainyesneb.jpg)
Seems kinda plain to me - the depth of field is a nice touch in my mind, i guess. You tell me.
The lighting is from all around, look at the luminescence of the nebula.
-
I like that last one but don't think your model is prominent enough. (if I have it right... I understand why though... perhaps putting the camera on a flank of the fleet?)
-
Going to render out another scene - standby.
-
Aye, the depth is nice, but it doesn't mesh currently. It just looks... off. Also for lighting, you might also consider your nebula should also be casting shadows, which i think is a commonly overlooked fact. And remember, nebulas, in and of themselves, produce no light but refract light from the stars within, so directional lighting is still a must
-
So,
Basically dA has taught be how to NOT run a contest. They've been wholly inconsistent in the rules, they have no mechanic for feedback, they were expecting 500 entries and got 3800, (thats right, more than 7 times the number they were expecting) and did not extend the judging period. They were unforgiving in their own interpretation of ambiguous rules and did were inconsistent in their clarifications (no this is not allowed, but then it is, then many pieces were disqualified for it, then some of the semi-finalists broke the rules, then one of the semi-finalists was booted out of the line up for breaking the rule). Furthermore, they entirely ignored another rule of their own, or at least had some arcane interpretation of it. Apparently "Suitable for inclusion in Eve online" did not mean that designs had to conform to the established motif - I, personally, cannot think of another interpretation of that phrase.
I'm never joining another deviantArt contest, I urge you all to do the same.
-
It took me a day to make an effective Beam-weapon rig that I was happy with. I can now make cool phaser/particle beam effects directly in my renders (no post work, naturally).
Tomorrow Morning I'm going to make some quick and easy Sprite weapons (ie: Photon Torpedo lookalikes) and some pulse weapon rigs. also, I need to make some good thruster effects, too.
-
Perfect light and shadow look real :)
-
thruster effects... like this?
Oh, and the render is awesome ;)
-
dA? I thought it was a CCP contest?
Don't worry FoaS, our art community is a step above here. (they can make fun of us for being trek geeks all they like :P)
We should have explicitly defined modelling technical challenges. Break new ground. Clear submission protocol. No prizes, but bragging rights in an elite community. Worth way more. ;)
(I have got to get the .mod format on the canvas... and WebGL is around the corner...)
-
Hey bonk,
The contest was actually a joint venture between CCP and deviantArt (or dA) - the 15 semi-finalists were picked by dA, the 3 winners would be picked out of the 15 by CCP. dA's selection for the 15 semi-finalists sucked. Furthermore, their handling of the public outcry was atrocious - hence my beef.
Anyways - to get back to better/more-fun stuff.
I will be doing a couple renders just out of pure fun. I've got a story in my head and I'm wondering how much fun getting a 3D comic finally made might be. Anyways, to that end - here's something I've got in my head. A few "Meet the people" type things. Not very Inspired renders, but something that will hopefully prove to be kinda neat.
-
3d comic... I love it. Dig through some of the fan fic.
I wish I could wiggle my nose and make the .mod format appear on canvas.
Put the two ideas together...
Even just a 3d rendered traditional comic is a great idea though. Would it be serious and dark a la Batman? Or outrageous and funny like Mad? Or some of both? Or obscurely artistic and obtuse? Use Dynageezer characters or fictional ones or a combo? Many possibilities. I really like it.
Oh wait, I'm translating it to Dynaverse and you were thinking an Eve universe comic?
-
Well, honestly, I'm too lazy to model everything from scratch (I have enough I'll have to model), therefor I'm using existing assets from Eve and Mass Effect. The universe/characters will probably be pretty dark (though, I'd like to fit some comic relief in there, somehow).
-
Also: Forgot eyebrows on our Human guy - will fix after work today.
-
Nice. Looks good
-
Great work Fury, those beam effects look spot on too.
