Completely pointless, but I always wondered . . .
In all of the TOS movies, why did they only use ship-based phasers in The Wrath of Khan? Depending on the movie, they may have given a reason why they didn't use the phasers (like in TMP, the bit about phasers being tied to the warp core in the wormhole scene), but they wouldn't have had to do that if they just used them instead. Maybe torpedoes were easier SFX?

Torpedoes were much easier to do the FX for. I was kinda hoping when I saw the Klingon Disruptors in Star Trek III, that we'd get to see the Enterprise fire Phasers at full power, giving a more beam like appearance, rather than the stutter Phaser effect that we saw in ST:II.

Ya the stutter effect looks like it is a ph-g

The stutter effect is okay, but I agree about seeing a full beam. I think the stutter phaser worked in ST2 because of the close ranges, but I can't imagine the stutter phasers reaching out and hitting another ship far away.

Something else I was thinking about, I remember reading about the amount of work that went into the SFX in ST:II. Every time a Phaser hit occurred they had to basically rip sections of the ship off to show the damage. Time consuming work to say the least, considering that they had to stop the motion control work in between each impact. It was far easier as the SFX crew to simple throw a few black paint balls at the Enterprise A to show Torpedo hits rather than try to tear it up frame by frame.
