Samsung have documented the feature for the Focus, saying that inserting a MicroSD card into a Windows Phone can be considered a “pernament modification” adding ”it will no longer be readable or writable on any other devices such as computers, cameras, printers, and so on”.

So if you use such a card in your Windows phone don't plan on ever moving it to another device.

Smells like DRM.

There is some speculation that Microsoft has created yet another new file system unique to their phone possibly including DRM that blocks other systems.  If so I would expect that before too long someone will crack it (first enough to allow reformatting) just as NTFS was cracked.

Looks like I won't be buying a Windows phone any time soon, as I change those MicroSD cards about once a year depending on when the kids get a new phone.  Idiots...

If it is just a new file system I'm sure soon at the least the ability to reformat the cards will be developed by someone (maybe even MS itself).  Only if it actually "damages" in someway the card would I expect it to remain truly irrevocable.
