Cryptic is going to run a contest to design the next Enterprise with various prize levels including of course for 1st place the inclusion of the design in the game.
Details here:
http://www.startrekonline.com/enterprise (http://www.startrekonline.com/enterprise)
Beginning Dec 9, 2010
-
I sure damn hope the winners design is leaning HEAVy to orignal tos theme. It wont though :'( expect a tng era.
-
Interesting. Thanks for the news Lepton!
There have been a few of these recently. I'd love to see an "open" modelling competition some time. Judged by the contributors and community. Specific tech goals. Break new ground. Categories of achievement... something to put in the Blender Foundation's ear? (perhaps they already do?)
-
I found it funny, I got the E-mail about this from Cryptic. I have never played STO or registered with it either.
-

Sadly so. Though the STO designs seem to be drifting away from the bathtoy look of TNG...
Wonder if I should trot out my Trek redesigns I've got floating around. Probably not glowy enough for what they want though.
...And if this is going to be anything like the Luna-class competitions, I'd expect to be underwhelmed by the winner :(

I completely agree, give a bit of freedom with the comp's... US only??? :hoppin:

The target market in Usa = teen max  Good luck Trek empire dead end soon to come if not already.

We just have to wait for Vampire Trek, Revenge of the Sparkles

We just have to wait for Vampire Trek, Revenge of the Sparkles
At this point all I ask is more than Romulan and Klingon end all evil .
-
Honestly have to say... am completely underwhelmed with this.
The Titan competition left me feeling like no matter what, Pablum will be the winner.
Hope that someone here enters, but suspect that there won't be much deviation from what we'd expect to see.
-
I may enter, but if I do, I will not hold back... I will be as far fetched as always. Probably won't win, but I will raise eyebrows
-
Since they're still in the TNG side of things, I say give it to them Atlom. That universe needed shaking up.
'Sides, how bad could it be?
-

Lots of people will want to see your ideas. I'd be disappointed now if you didn't. :)
-
My apologies mates,
I actually will not be entering the Ent comp, due to cryptic's lack of discretion in allowing plagiarized works to be entered.
Even my work has been entered without my permission or credits. So, sorry mates I'm out.
-
I'm not surprised, though disappointed, at the lack of quality control for the contest entries. When I see some of them that make me nod adn think they're great, now I'm wondering if an anybody on the internet just uploaded them. I'm also seeing entries of what looks like a color-inverted version of the original 1701!
Makes me think that the whole venture of STO is going down the tubes, if this is what they can scrape together for a contest.
-
Even my work has been entered without my permission or credits.
WHERE?!? OOOH, MY ASS KICKING BOOTS ARE ON!
-
I have to ask, is the accessing the gallery deliberately difficult? I have a hard time viewing all the entries there.
-
Archer class ?
-
They really need some help over there.
-
The Titan competition left me feeling like no matter what, Pablum will be the winner.
Probably what's likely to happen if they sought 'help.'
Iunno, all the high-level personalities here (FoAS, WZ, Atlom) put their own spins on trek that probably wouldn't find acceptance with the judges. We like them, for their individuality compared to the rest of the universe. But part of me thinks the judges are looking for the best of the mediocre, if that makes any sense.
-
OK guys, I thought I would try my hand at this competition. Since there is already a thread for it, here is a link to vote for mine if you are so inclined:
http://www.startrekonline.com/enterprise/gallery?share=1093 (http://www.startrekonline.com/enterprise/gallery?share=1093)
If anyone else has made an entry, let us know, I will be sure to go and vote for it!
Considering the design styles of Star Trek Online vessels, I desided to go with a fanboyish design in hopes of both getting votes and meeting the style. You may recognize the shape of the model, I had posted a WIP a couple years ago. If I fall flat on my face, I will release it for SFC.
-
there's some good stuff in there.
-
Hey guys, I think tomorrow is the last day to enter or vote in The Next Enterprise Contest, so if you want to have any say in what The Big "F" looks like, time is short. I think I am partial to the Chris Madden design currently in the lead. If you don't like his, vote for mine (or both)!
http://www.startrekonline.com/enterprise/gallery?share=1093 (http://www.startrekonline.com/enterprise/gallery?share=1093)
If anyone else has an entry, post the link and I will vote for it!

Likely winners (most votes/highest rated):

This could be the next Enterprise! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEUf9UfRpSU#ws)
These seem like relatively late entries so the fix could be in.
Below are two of my favorites, but I assume one of the above two will win.
I think this one is pretty cool.

And this one for shear heft:

-
Fuzzy Modem's ship is pretty cool, but I don't think I could see it as the next Enterprise. The second ship though, now that's an Enterprise if I ever saw one. She harkens back to the Constitution Class, but has that updated modern feel.
-
They are all great designs, but they don't feel like Enterprises to me.
-
http://www.startrekonline.com/enterprise/sites/default/files/imagecache/preview/C5.jpg (http://www.startrekonline.com/enterprise/sites/default/files/imagecache/preview/C5.jpg) -- Is this not the Atolms design ? the pic is still up for a vote!?? nope they ALL suck not due to design but admins and lack there of! No true person can judge the pics still up for a vote,Who riped what?SAD to say?why ask at this point?
-
Yup - that is his. I reported it and I didn't even get a canned email response.
-
This one is definitely my favorite:
I don't think the fix is in, on it because it was submitted in the first, maybe second week. It looks like a new comer because the voting just started working right in the last week.
Though I don't like it as much, I think this one fits the STO aesthetic the best:
-
I also like the Dedication class, because I think it best encapsulates all the great things about all the Enterprises over the years. Even if it does use those stupid phaser strips :\
Chances are, like in the Lunar contest, the first one will win because it's the front runner I like the least :\
The last one looks like a beefier Sovereign. I suppose you can say the same about the Dedication class, but at least it's omitted ovals and returned to perfect circles. The engineering hull is smaller and separate as well, instead of meshed together with the saucer.
-
I looked at the rules and they state that the judges are going to look at every entry, that they MAY use these community votes, and the judges will make recommendations to a final judge who will make all the decisions. So, these may not be the winners.
-

Grrr. Our Atolm? OUR Atolm!!! >:(
Frey was going to start PR damage control with Cryptic, this could be a significant roadblock, he must be informed. I'll stay out of it, I don't do that type of thing very well.
Atolm, I think it is time. We have watched your work and appreciated it here for years, and I expect you already think of us as a bit of an online "home".
You know how we have Hstaphath_XC "The Official Bard of XenoCorp". Well... I think it is time we recognise that in your work. I feel that the umbrella of the Dynaverse Gaming Association is an appropriate one for it.
I have a whole bunch of ideas, visions, to discuss, that do not require you to change a single thing that you do, just keep being the Atolm we love.
Think about it. Not too seriously though, as it is all about the game and fun, not work!
FoaS has sort of assumed the duties of Art Director, and I value his guidance and assistance. I'm going to need to fill an entirely custom SFC .q3 file at some point...
Apologies if this is putting you on the spot, but I think your contributions merit official recognition, and have our backing, we are not-for-profit and all about stewarding art and gaming fun. You give your art freely and that is totally the spirit of Dynaverse.net, but recognition and common courtesy are key.
Don't let this change how you think of us at all though, if you're not comfortable with the idea, we'll still love you like our own. If you do like the idea though, we'll all be pretty excited.
P.S. Frey was not really familiar with your work, I reviewed some of it with him one night recently (after I informed him that the art assets are not present in the EAW codebase we have) to show him some of the talent that graces our doors and he was extremely impressed. I mean really impressed.

WTF!
Nearly as I can tell, this choice had absolutely nothing to do with any of the votes given by the STO community.
Bullsh*t.
Can't even find it is the listing of Highest Rated or Most Votes here:

Congrats to Adam Ihle. Bad news: I did not win. Good news: I will soon release mine for SFC.
-
Can't say that I care for the winner at all, doesn't look at all practical. Saucer sep would be a right bugger.
-
its okay... to me it feels too much like a Sovereign + galaxy with a gimmicky neck. it'd be an okay filler if it were re-proportioned a little, but not an Enterprise.
-
Strange how these competition winners seem to elicit an underwhelmed reaction around here.
I agree with FoaS, it's OK, but it isn't a big enough departure to impress me, it is too recognisably derivative of the the Galaxy and Sovereign. Perhaps that's what the final judges wanted though.
I'm under the impression that saucer sep is an emergency procedure rather than a normal operation, so whilst reconnection may appear a tricker option with this design, seperation would be just as practical/impractical as that demonstrated by the Galaxy.
-
The thing that bugs the sh*t out of me with STO models is that not a single one of them pays any respect to design lineage. They all try to look gimmicky and cool, and there is absolutely zero practicality or consistency in any of the designs. It's as if Michael Bay or Kenny G were designing starships - all fluff and no substance.
This one is no exception.
-

I am with you on this one the bottom one looks to much like JJs ship.

Really? I see this one as something similar to what Mackie could do with the right parts, and not a bad update to the Chabot to post-Voyager days.
Kind of reminds me of a Buick, the same way that the Galaxy class always did. :)

The top looks more like the classic or TMP version

Congrats to the winner. While I respect the work put into the design, I myself don't see it as the Enterprise. I'm sure opinions will be divided, as they usually are.
Of course, the root of the issue is: Nobody really knows what they want an Enterprise to look like, they just know what they don't want it to look like. Always a challenging thing for any designer.

Highly magnanimous of you, WZ; however I cannot agree. From what I can tell, the winner posted what I assume was his one and only sketch of the design over at TrekBBS the same day the contest began:
http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=132240&page=13 (http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=132240&page=13)
And admitted here that he thought the design was derivative and needed to go back to drawing board:
http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=132240&page=15 (http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=132240&page=15)
Then did sh*t for sh*t after that.
Nearly all the much more competent and well designed models were submitted full color, fully fleshed out with every indication that the designs were also likely modeled in 3D, textured, etc. Every person who has created a model on this board and elsewhere has done more and shows more technical skill than this idiot.
This guy does not deserve to win considering the level of effort and the technical skill shown, let alone the quality of the design which is minimal at best.
-
I lost the contest, but you win! This link will let you download the model for my contest entry. It has textures and light maps. You will have to add your own icing, including hard points. . . .
