Smoothing a model. I don't know why I am the only one having these problems, but it doesn't seem to matter what I do, any model I make can't seem to be smoothed properly. When I correct smoothing for every single polygon and export, the smoothing gets screwed up, and I can't figure out why!!!!
Anyone remember my TOS Destroyer that I made last year, the U.S.S. Bludhaven? http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163390200.0.html (http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163390200.0.html)
I had nothing but problems, which I thought I solved. I ported the model to MOD format, since it's game level quality, and only recently has work progressed on the textures. But, the smoothing, the smoothing is fubar!! I've tried redoing the smoothing several times, but nothing. No matter what I do, the smoothing changes itself. It doesn't retain any smoothing. I'm tired and frustrated.
Why can't this stuff be simple?

this is because SFC doesn't do smoothing groups correctly per say. What needs to be done at a very minimum is detachin the smoothing groups to the mesh in order to ensure that the smoothing sticks. FoaS has a script which does essentially that and makes it relatively painless. Once that is done the model is safe for export and will maintain its look

Tus is right. SFC Handles smoothing groups very badly (ie: not at all). That script he spoke of: I remember you trying it, but not getting it to work. I couldn't replicate the problem, though.

I know, I tried it again, referencing your vid tuts again last night. Nothing. *grabs shotgun, loads rubber chicken shells, and shoots self* I have no idea why!!! Anyone wanna take a stab at fixing the smoothing problems on the Demphir once F_W is done with the textures and lightmaps?

Sure :)

Sweet, cause you were gonna be the first person I begged if no one volunteered. :-D Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to wipe up my gray matter off the walls.

I know the feeling >.<

You've shot yourself with a double barrel shotgun loaded with rubber chicken shells before?

Metaphorically? Yes

Ahhh. *hands Fury a mop and bucket*

May i have a look at the model ? 3ds format will work. Smoothing might be problematic where the verts are placed . Slight ajustment of vert placement may smooth it perfect depending on the design.
-
It's nothing to do with the vert placement. The model, before any porting is attempted, smooths perfectly. Once the model is ported, that's where smoothing becomes near impossible.
-
I didn't say you were happy. I was going to say I was gonna make you sleep with Oprah if you didn't finish the textures.

3ds format is the badest choise, as it destroys good smoothing at export. i had that smoothing problems with my Armada 2 models and discovered that 3ds format was the problem.

What I have learned about this issue is due mostly to the verts on each maping section not being welded back together after maping. But I dont know if thats the issue.
I use gmax have had for the last 3 years so i cant say on any real good way to do anything.
