Very cool! :D
-
Nice. Will you be doing a version without the shadows on them?
-
no, planets are half covered in shadow, there is no reason for them not to be especially since sfc doesn't have mutliple source lighting
-
They look great! Doesn't the game cast the shadow on the planets itself. Will they look weird if the baked-in shadow doesn't line up with the game engine's effect?
-
the game doesn't cast raytraced shadows, it could be better described as shading than anything else. and no it won't look wierd, it will actually look more real. The planets are set up specifically so the game engine will place the light side always facing the light source.
-
Sweet!
Will these be compatible with Firesoul's OP+ hard pointed planets?
-
How does the game know which is the light side and the dark side? Are you matching "front" and "Back" to the in-game planets? Also, should any of the planets have a tilt, e.g. the earth is 32 deg.?
-
KF: yes, these are compatable w/ the ones i re-hped for - thats sorta the reason for doing them ;)
IM: Basically its orientation of the model. The 'front' will always be pointing toward the light source. As for tilt that also depends on position in orbit, technically speaking if these planets had a tilt they would be in the fall/spring position in their orbits since the tilt isnt' pronounced in the shadow.

Progress on the tech planet, Tus.

I need to ridge it up, get rid of the monotony, but its a basic starting point.
I kind of want to throw a bit of a coppery look in there, too :).

sweet, looks good

I see someone is useing Planetscape Tool for Photoshop, the only problem with Planetscape is that it only supports 8bit colors
Planets are looking good :)
-
Nope, Lunarcell - a photoshop plugin.

aye, Lunar cell is what i'm using, its pretty good for getting started, but I wouldn't use it to create the 'finished' product. Basically use it to create the color maps & bumps, ocean masks, cloud maps and bumps . I do know how to make those, they are just time consuming and a pain in the ass. From there its alot finagling to include retouching, modifciations, additions, subtractions, etc to the maps to get them to look right.
There are a few in which I don't use it, such as actual maps and a few of the rocky ones (such as fire world)

Good to know about the planet orientation!
-
Just to give you a better idear of exactly what you are getting... only 12 more to go :)

Sorry, a bit distracted atm, had some masters stuff to do and i started groundschool. Should have some time this weekend to get a few more out.
-
2 screen shots as requested ;)
-
BUMP for an update!
-
Oi, june sucked for updates ;). I'm taking a break from my masters for the rest of the summer, the only other thing i'm doing is taking flying lessons. I should be able to find some time to finish these up (as soon as i get back in the swing of it that is)
-
BUMP
These new planets will be a welcome addition to revamping SFC...
-
Some bad news. I was updateing my computer, thought i had everything backed up. Seems that some of my files did not get copied over to my external, and these were some of those. I will need to see how many i will need to re do... have few in another location.
-
How's the recovery coming?
-
I have two planets and no work files...
-
;D How goes this fine project? Any progress on the recovery?
-
well i'll be doing a new system build come december/january. around that time frame this computer will get wiped again and be made into my dedicated project machine (aka photoshop and max). as it stands i don't have the hd space to do a dual install on this system so none of my software works.
-
Reading this thread over, I have to say this is discouraging news.
Having newer planets woud have opened up additional possibilities to imrove SFC game play and make planetary attack/defense missions extra special.
At this stage, I have to say having the revamped planets is MORE important than another damn Federation ship.
Hope everything goes well on the new PC TUS.
