Title: Should I give up my SFC software?
Post by: Magnum357 on July 13, 2011, 04:42:24 pm
I've reached a point where I'm wondering if I should give up my copies of SFC1, SFC OP< and SFC3 mostly because I face conciquences if I play them now, they kinda are just taking up space (if your not using them, there basically drink costers) and I'm reaching an age in my life (I'm 34+ now) where I wonder if I'm getting too old to play this stuff anymore.  Does anyone agree with this logic or not?

If I did give them up (not saying I will, but perhaps) does anyone want a copy?  Or should I keep them and if I ever have family, hand them down to son or daughter?  (although finding a date in the town I live in can be a challenge).

Like any1 here is going to tell you to throw them away and never come back! Hah!

Seriously tho, download imgburn and backup the CD's. Write the codes in a text file, and if you really want the 1 inch of space free, toss em. Even if you were to buy them now-a-days, all you would get is a digital download, same thing.

As for to old to play? I think you will find many of those who hand around forums are older than you! Soon tho, hopefully, some new stuff will come out and things will pick up again. So don't be too eager to jump ship.

EDIT: That means my vote would be "Your not washed up, but if you want, save the CD's on PC and throw them away"

as for age, look at the calender and check out us old fogies on here.  Age is just a number.  Everyones mileage may vary, but I hope to be playing along on this game 'til they close the lid on me.

Like what...?
I'll be 50 in a few days, 4 grown kids, even have a grandson. Never too old to blow s*** up!
Everybody's got a hobby, and mine at least keeps me home with the wife and out of trouble.  ;D

The only REAL issues would be can you keep handy a xp machine to run them for future events . The disks are worthless if the OS wont let them work so Save your machine that works them now and buy a new one for future use. Save the games and SAVE those xp machines that can play them untill the vista/7 play issues are solved.

I wouldn't - not in a million years. This is the best, most tactically depthed, most cerebral game I have ever played.

ya it's old and no it doesn't work correctly on the new oses. I'm not playing atm because of family issues. I'll be 49 in a few months.I still have them tucked away for the day they get those issues worked out so that we can have  campaign's again. I really do miss them.

Don't forget there is someone with that name on this board meaning me.I would use time.

I would go freak if something happened to mine as they get harder to replace with every passing year.

You can pick up SFC OP from Dynaverse at the store.  Might as well, pick up a copy of EAW also as everyone will need a copy of that.

I really hate the "you're too old" stuff.  Do you still enjoy it?  If yes then who cares how old you are?  If not then it really doesn't matter how old or young you are.

in the bar under the title on the main page.  Go almost all the way to the right.  It says Market.
http://www.dynaverse.net/market/ (http://www.dynaverse.net/market/)

It has digital downloads for EAW and OP for about a 6 dollar donation.

Does Interplay receive and funds from this as it is their game?
Title: Re: Should I give up my SFC software?
Post by: marstone on July 20, 2011, 04:10:00 am
No.  One reason is the download is a cookie for doing a donation.  Other reasons too, but I am not the legal guy or in the know of the behind the scenes workings.

It is nice to know we can get a copy of EAW someplace and when it is needed in the future you will know where to get one if you don't already own a copy.

ALL of the SFC games work for me on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I haven't crashed, or anything similar. What issues are you gents speaking of?

Also, don't get rid of your copies of a hard to find game. Especially one that still has such a great community. Someday you might find yourself feeling nostalgic.

The games run under windows 7 and vista, but using the Dynaverse doesn't.  it lags out.  So you can't use that multi-player part, but single player works.  (I don't know if the other multi-player parts work or not or if they give problem).

But the Dynaverse is looking for a comeback soon for windows 7 and vista users.

I wasn't sure of the GSA, but the Dyna is broken on the SFC versions that are out there right now  (tho I do think SFC3 works but I don't play that one so can't say for sure).  You can get in, but it takes many minutes to do an update of the map and things like that, so it doesn't work as you can't be insinc with others.

For now, I'll keep the copies I have (was thinking about selling them) but playing games multiplayer isn't the same like it was on GSA.  The "new" GSA doesn't seem to work well with XP (the computer i'm using) and I'm not sure about game ranger.  Besides, I can't play faster then speed 4 setting.  This is why I'm not sure if I should even bother playing SFC anymore, just a big hassel.

You don't stop playing because you grow old. You grow old because you stop playing.

Im close to 50 and still going strong.
I have been gaming since Pong, and will continue, untill im not able to anymore, or dead.

well, I kinda feel too old to play these games.  I'm single and can't seem to find a date.  I've tried a few online dating sites (man, some of them rip off your money) and I have got to a few bars to try to pick up chicks (might try again soon) but my luck has been "0".  So I feel kinda to old, at least you guys can play with your kids, I got no kids or a GF to play this game with.  :(

It also don't help that I'm unemployed at this time.  Trying to find work, but its tough.

Ouch.  Sounds like life's got you on a down spell... :(

Look.  I remember what you did.  Surprised that a person with your talents hasn't found something yet, but, then again, I know the economy sucks right now...  Have you considered a change in scenery?

On an aside - maybe closer to topic actually - I've always played this game (and many others) with one rule in mind - everything in moderation.  I fondly recall writing many a late-night strategy post while waiting for my youngest to wake up for her midnight snack, so that I could give wifey a break.  Which is why I suck at PvP - avoided all the battles and went off on anti-AI runs so that I could care for the family.  Still have issues devoting large blocks of time to games without a pause option (essentially most multiplayer stuff) because I frequently have to be ready to drop at a moment's notice to care for the clan.  When life pays you back for all the torture it's putting you through now, you can rejoin the gang here and throw down with a match or two...

Here's hoping that the gang can get SFC and Win 7 happy together.  Kids will kill me if I commandeer one of their computers that still have XP on them... :P

Age, Interplay has nothing to do with EAW / OP. We're the only site that can do this as we own the rights to EAW / OP.

Hey man - I understand the burnout - but just take a break from the PC and get your social on.

Trust me - many of us - when we get in a committed relationship - miss being single and getting our game on whenever and wherever we wanted to.

Do I have time for SFC right now - nah - haven't played more than a round or two in years - but some classic games - like chess - are really ageless.

Heck I'm turning 40 in just a few and I'm practically buying 1 to 2 games a week on steam these days - for when I do get some time to slow down and smell the roses.

The trick to aging gracefully is to spend your time on things of quality - instead of quantity - then any time invested is well spent.

Good luck to you! - the Road will Rise to meet you sooner than you think.
