Due to massive amount of spammers registering on SFC2.NET so they can fill the General forum with ads and what not, I have made the general forum private.
I know the forums are pretty dead now as there have been no "serious" campaigns in quite some time, but getting 15-20 spam posts a day was driving me nuts !!
So, i you want to be able to post there, you have to request permission to join the usergroup "GEN". You can also private msg me on SFC2.net forums, or email me at:
capt_jeff_1af@hotmail.com. Please give me your name as it is on those forums if you do ask for permission.

It is not looking very good for phpbb. I am getting nowhere with it. I can't even get admin permissions on those forums, and I have root access to the disk and database! We may have to replace those forums with a different product. The phpbb.com site itself is broken right now. Account activations do not arrive. I think phpbb may be dead.
I'm going to stew on it a bit, but it looks like those phpbb forums will have to go. There are several working alternatives to consider.

We're working on it Jeff. I had asked SFHQ to try to fix this a while back, but he's ran into something that's stymied him , so we've gotten Bonk involved as you can see.
Between the two of them, I'm sure we'll get that worked out!

I'm on the way to a solution. The Star Trek theme has to go or get a major re-write. It has many unacceptable issues. I suggest instead simply making a copy of the default style and edit that. Always works best with phpbb which is an absolute bitch when it comes to themes/styles, always has been.
But, logged in as admin I do not see the General forum at all anymore? Where'd it go? We may need to restore a backup to recover it? Also, as a guest I see no public forums and a few forums that I would not expect to be public (see attached image).
I will diagnose, fix and explain all of it, but will leave it to you guys to cleanup and polish. But keep my strict anal retentive standards in mind. ;)

Just like here (I believe), if you are not registered, and logged in, you cannot see most of the forums at SFC2.net. That's the way it has been since I've been dealing with it.....
I see every forum available when I am logged in, including the general forum ;)

Then something is seriously wrong. If as guests we see two different things, that sounds really, really bad... and when both logged in as admins again we see two different forums, that is even worse. If this is really the case then I'd have to pronounce those forums dead.
I still cant register at phpbb.com itself. That is really really bad. The developers site itself is broken. We can no longer trust the product.

I just had an idea to ressurect the sfc2.net phpbb forums. I will give it a whirl and advise.
This is killing me, I just recently made a major advancement in SFC networking with Strat's help (it will be almost foolproof), and this is holding up the first open beta for Starfleet Command: Community Edition. I suspect the timing of this spam assault is no accident. :skeptic:

OK. I think I've rescued it. I did a complete permissions overhaul and created a new theme based on the stock one (only changed a single image in it thus far - it will be a bunch of work to finish it). I have not seen any spam registrations since I setup the Q&A registration plugin. (And I can lock it down tighter if need be - waiting on a release version of a Bad-Behaviour mod for phpbb3 - I expect it will be along soon...)
So, I think we're back in business.
Jeff, SFHQ, Frey, we'll need to meet on TS and discuss this so we're all on the same page.
