Just sharing this link, guys. It's an interesting design that some of you may like or want to model: http://www.guntruck.com/USSHoodPage1.html (http://www.guntruck.com/USSHoodPage1.html)

interesting. I would add one of those "neck" mounted shuttle bays on it like I have seen on some destroyers though.
-
Yes! Or a "hanger pocket" built into the primary hull, like you see on ships like the Abbe missile cruiser and some TMP era-destroyers. You can see it on the right hand side of the primary saucer: Abbé Scene01 - Rapid Firing Torpedoes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79lPJ_-AWDY#ws)

That was a SWEET video!

Ain't it, though! The actual model is over: http://enterprise-e.deviantart.com/art/Abbe-class-starship-demo-01-105670974 (http://enterprise-e.deviantart.com/art/Abbe-class-starship-demo-01-105670974)

That was wicked ;D
-
Yes very nice ;D

One wonders how the Reliant would have fared had Kirk had an Abbe instead of the Connie refit...
-
I don't think it would make a difference as Kahn would still get the first shot.

I've been wondering how to put a shuttle bay on a Saladin Class Destroyer. I figure I'll get it solved by the time I finish scratch building my version of a TMP era D5p.
-
I like Lord Schtupp's solution the most.

I like Lord Schtupp's solution the most.
I agree, his "under-slung" hanger is my favorite for smaller ships.
-
Lord Schtupp's solution to the shuttlebay looks like an engineering nightmare. There's a lot of plumbing under the impulse deck, not to mention having the bay intrude into the warp core. It's the obvious solution with the classic TOS idea where the warp engines are descrete, but for a TMP ship, it is highly problematic. The warp core is something that has to be engineered around. A shuttle bay is a vulnerable compartment, and the close proximity of the shuttle bay would turn a serious accident or battle damage into a catastrophie.
The Abbe Class Destroyer shows some thinking outside the box. There is no rule that shuttles have to dock from behind. Coming down from above, as if making a terrestrial landing makes perfect sense. The more I think of it, the more I like it.
-
Well you could always go with the Maso Solution have the shuttle deck extend behind decks 2 to 4 like this picture

That's the other one that came to mind, but I prefer Schtupp's solution. 6 of one half dozen the other.

Yea all you need do is run the plasma transfere conduit down the front of the pylon. Remember You already hav eto move main Enginering and the M/A reactor into the primary hull. So all thats left is the plasma conduit to the Necelle. And it looks nice See I did something simalar with an Akula.

The top hull solution had come to mind early, but the external structure of the impulse deck has to remain exposed in a TMP design. So much that is possible with TOS just doesn't work with TMP.
Putting the shuttle bay down and behind the warp pylon, almost as a secondary hull is the idea that I've liked best. It maintains consistancy with the Enterprize, and as this ship will be a kit bash, allows me to simply use the hanger door from a the same model.
Still, my D5p is years away from completion. I'm never doing anything this ambitious again. I've made the gunboats, including a leader and scout. The boom, an all original design is done, except the paint. I still have to put the front detail on the warp engine nacells.
The sticking point I'm working on now is the maintanence bays. How can making such a simple shape be so difficult? Once I can make that shape, I can make a mold, pour some plastic, and use my brother vac-u-form to make the actual parts. I never should have started this!
The Federation destroyer will be a simple kit-bash. The classic Saladin idea just doesn't look right with the size of the Enterprise refit, so I'll have to use AMT's TOS Enterprise for the primary hull. Details will come off the AMT's Refit kit. The engines and main deflector will come off Bandai's 1:800 scale kit. A single engine doesn't look right, but the two small nacells look right with the TOS saucer.
If I could just find some nacells of an intermediat size, I'd think about a New Light Cruiser. Kahn's ship must have been some varient of a New Heavy.

There is a gentlebeing on the Starship modeler forum who specializes in selling Starship model parts all in 1:1000 scale
He's put together an impressive amount of tos warp engines of different sizes as well as lot of other material
Another option is a drop bay into the Saucer Like the Abbey class I'd put a drop bay just aft of lounge windows ;D

I figure the area between the bridge and the impulse deck would be a very busy engineering space, and prone to accidents. I'm going to have to post what I've made for my D5p in the hobby forum. I'll need some server space for the pics. I'm nowhere near complete. Once that is done, I can worry about the Federation Destroyer.
