If you are looking for a specific model, you might have luck asking the author to convert it to 3ds/OBJ format for you.
If you want to do it yourself you'll needs 3ds Max 4 or 5, Milkshape, or GMax: All of which can support MOD files with the proper plugin.

Make sure you check the permissoins thread, as some people do not allow conversions of their model, whereas some folk may want you to check with them first.

If you render something up, be sure to share it here! We love great pics of great starships! As FOAS said, Milkshape is your best bet! You can get a free fully functional 30 day trial. After that it is somewhere between $25 and $35. Best value I ever got out of a computer program!

As far as I am aware, Legacy is in a format that we cannot convert back to a 3D app. I may be wrong, as we don't really delve into Legacy much over here.

Legacy is a closed format and the Legacy modding community grew out of the Armada modding community which had a no back conversion philosophy. This may help however, a lot of early legacy mods used the Armada export plugins because the file type was very similar. Some custom Legacy ships you may be able to convert back. The Armada community likes to pretend this doesn't exist, but here I give you a sod to mod converter that was posted at Frostworks years ago.
