I remember reading somewhere that Spock's death was originally supposed to be permanent since Leonard Nimoy didn't want to continue playing the character, and the only way they got him to come back was by letting him direct. If that was the case, does anyone have any idea about what McCoy was supposed to remember?

Strat is correct. They left it kind of open like that, and when they came back to it, they figured, hey, this is the way to go with it, for ST 3.

Leonard didn't even want to do TMP. Robert Wise said, you can't have a Star Trek Movie without Spock, so he went and personally lobbied Leonard to come back. Leonard hated the way he was written in the movie and wanted nothing more to do with it. Then came ST II, Nicholas Meyer said the same thing, can't have Star Trek without Spock, went to Leonard, and Leonard said, "Only if you kill me." They agreed, and wrote the script that way. After they watched what they had, Leonard said that that was the best portrayal of Spock he had ever seen. And decided that he really did want to continue it after all. They added the second "Remember" Scene. Leonard was annoyed with that because they didn't even ask him to use his hand, they got one of the grips that had the same complexion that Leonard did and had him put his hand on DeForest's face. Leonard was very particular about where he put his hands for all of the Vulcan stuff, and the grip couldn't care less. The first "Remember" Scene was only seen in ST III, when Kirk is reviewing the Engine Room Flight Recorder logs.
