Title: New Star Wars Trailer
Post by: Corbomite on November 28, 2014, 01:20:25 pm
Well, the visual design looks good and that shot of the X-Wings is awesome, but the shaky follow cam on the Millenium Falcon bothers me, as does all camera work like that. If people see the world like that they need to see a good ear, nose and throat man or a neurologist because they have a serious medical issue that needs addressing  ;).

Pros:

I like the new deflector dish on the Falcon.
I love the new hilt on the light saber.
I enjoy the atmospheric effects of the X-wings over the water.

Cons:

The movie is called Star Wars, which implies space, not another visit to a desert. If it's gonna be about a desert, then let's call it desert wars or something.

Still not sure who the good guy bad guy is here. From what the rumor mill says, the Storm Trooper dude , is supposed to become the new good Jedi, (I think, not 100% on that) and that the Skywalker kid, may be the new bad gal.

I understand Disney want's to spoon feed us info over the next year or so, but a trailer with nothing but special effects doesn't really engender itself to me , as much as wanting to know what we are up against.

In the mean time, I am forced to create my own enemy, and I choose Sea Otters, because f*ck them that's why. an Army of Dark Side empowered Sea Otters have returned to tattoine, because in their water world, they don't have enough sand, and yes, that means the people must pay, and pay they will. Bring on Darth Snaggle Tooth. I Await the Sea Otter subjugation of those puny commie rebels.

I'm suprised they released anything at all this early. Like you said, it doesn't tell you a thing about plot or character so all I could comment on was how it looked.

They'll never beat Darth Maul's staff. I mean c'mon, it got chopped in half and he still had a viable weapon!

The scary thing is that it is entirely possible that they showed the whole plot and characterization.  :(

Interesting thing to note: Star Wars Episode VII will be the first Star Wars Movie to NOT have Darth Vader in it.

This one has Han Solo in it at least.

That we know of. He could be in it as a force spirit.

I saw that in one of the trailers in the other forum.

Meesa not seeing any lens flare! Meesa cautiously optimistic 'cause it is still looking good! Meesa hopes there is a story there.

And what's with Chewy? How long do wookies live anyway? He must be pushing one hundred by that era and he looks even younger than he did in Star Wars.

I really don't want to see Hans Solo as an old man.  Smugglers tend to either get rich and retire, or they die.  Having been a hero in the Revolution, you would have thought a few doors would have opened for him in the new order.  If Solo is flying the same old ship he had when the Emperor bought the farm, his life went absolutely nowhere.  That's just increadibly sad.

Either that, or the people who wrote this film are hacks that never had an original thought....  JJ Abrams....  OK, I'm repeating myself.

I know it's silly, but I can't help it: whenever I see clips of Abrams' Star Wars or Star Trek films, I get the feeling that the Star Trek movies will always be considered Abrams' "warm ups" to his Star Wars films, and inferior.

And they probably will be inferior to his Star Wars films, which bugs me only because I love Trek more, and am lukewarm on where Abrams took Trek.

Okay, nerd rant off.

That said, new Star Wars trailer looked cool.

I can see him going back to his old ways, maybe a bit more legit and with higher contacts. The responsibility of command and greater things never really seemed to sit well with him. As for the ship; that would be like asking an old hot-rodder to get rid of the last Ford GT40 in existence. We really don't know yet. Maybe Leia kicked him out on his can and he's been paying alimony and child support for thirty years.  ;)

Here's to hoping that Harrison Ford's gravitas saves the day!

Yep, the new trailer looks cool.

Maybe, just maybe, JJ will not give in to his urges and this might actually turn out OK!  Shouldn't get my hopes up though.  Maybe if I just think of it as some cool video game with spaceships...

I am actually really looking forward to this. If they have gone ahead inserted a smattering of scenes with whiny bad acting I'll be ten years old again!  ;D

Well, they have expertly accomplished not giving away any of the story, so we could still be looking at a Phantom Menace here, i.e. that looked great in previews too, and then was not well received.

We can only hope that this is not because they have to cover up the meh but because they understand that a good trailer pulls you in without giving away the story. JJ is a good director and his Trek was a good movie but for many of us the departure from the Trek we had grown up with was too much.

You know, I just realized that this (and the future films) can never, ever be true Star Wars films. They won't have the prelude 20th Century Fox fanfare that John Williams resurrected and rearranged specifically for the original Star Wars that perfectly segues into the blast of horns when the first title card appears.  :(

I'm carefully optimistic myself. anyways, this might belong in H&S, but did you dudes hear about the moron who killed himself in NC, because one of the Heroes is black? I think the man just won Darwin of the year.

Yeah I heard about that racist garbage. I guess James Earl Jones, Billy Dee Williams and the two guys who played the Naboo Captains of the Guard in the first two prequels are just really white guys in black-face.  ::)

HAH! Good point Corbo. Things like that tick me off for some reason.

Heck, I saw the trailer for the new Batman toon coming out, the other day, and some one was bitching about Batwing (no clue who that is), being black. It just drives me crazy.

Batwing=Luke Fox, Lucius Fox's son, so of course he is black. What would one expect? The first Batwing was black too, so I'm not seeing even a "you're ruining my childhood" reason here.

The only "problem" I have with casting a black actor in a role that was traditionally played by a white person is when they are doing it because "We need a black person in the movie" political correctness BS.

Oh, Hell, I forgot Samuel L. Jackson too! Can't forget the Mighty Windu.

I'm not a fan of racial rebranding either. I don't mind that Nick Fury (and by proxy Sgt. Fury) suddenly changed skin color, I just didn't think it was necessary. I'd rather they highlight already racially diverse characters like they are doing with War Machine and Falcon in the Marvel films. I keep wondering when a Black Panther movie will be greenlit. At least when Marvel wanted to change Psylocke from white into Asian they came up with a storyline that explained it.

Or because Will Smith wants to force his children on us.

Ahh ok, Thanks Corbo I know who Batwing is now.

I tell ya what I hate about black actors in general. If they get any screen time at all, it will be a horror movie, where they will almost always be the first to die. And as Brush wolf said, If they remade Psycho, today, The roll played by Janet Leigh (Marion Crane) would instead be a transexual black man, just because it's more PC.

Then again, I'm a bit weird. When it comes to Entertainment, I am a misogynist, esp. with all the old 80's horror movies and halloween creeping up.  They just don't work other wise.

Sam Jackson as Nick Fury. well, to be fair, when Marvel did the ultimates, in paper, they went with him in mind. It really doesn't bother me that they made him that way in the movies.  Now granted, there is very few movies with a black lead (or let me rephrase that , that I enjoy.)  Danny Glover in Pred 2 or the Lethal weapon series is a great example of it done right.

I only watched the first few episodes of Lost.  I thought it was pointless crap.  I went to see the first JJ Abrams' Star Trek hoping to see something new and different, only to realize that it was a mean spirited parody.  These are the only works of Abrams I've seen, so if he made anything "good," I haven't seen it.

As far as Star Wars goes, how can a hack director mess up a feature length toy commercial?

I can safely say that I'm not in the JJ Abrams fan club (yet, at least), but I won't go so far as to say he's as bad as Michael Bay. He's a huge fan of SW, so I'm going to hope he has had the sense to absorb all the fan backlash of the last twenty odd years and find his inner Jedi. We also have the issue that this is the first film in a new series. Nothing important will be resolved story-wise in the first film. If we are lucky it will just be a good installment.

New Japanese trailer. It shows more and has longer vignettes. The story speculators are going to have a field day. I'm still looking forward to it so far.
