Ok guys, I think I have the solution to this: Blender v2.73. It was a free download. Imports .fbx files and can export .obj, and  .3ds files without need for plugins. Its already there. Playing with the models now. As noted, many are just parts of ships, or more precisely parts mashed together. When pieces are pulled apart in the file, the whole ship seems to be there. Just not in a recognizable shape.

The models look better than I expected! They have a lot more detail than what I was expecting. Thank you OpetJa for making this available!

3rd It doesn't give me a fix that makes studio max 3, 4 or 5 usable in windows 7 as they are not compatible with anything above vista.
So unless you can set up Virtual boxes to run XP or have a computer old enough that wasn't force-ably upgraded by microsoft when win7 and win8 came out. All that money spent on software all those years ago is essentially wasted.

I know how to make Max 3 work on Win7, you just need an already installed folder from an older windows of it and than copy it to your HDD where Win7 is installed, than start it and use your reg code and it works (for me it does)  ;)

For these STO models, i say you don't have anny permission to make them public, as those are property of cryptic and those guys won't even give you permission if you release these direct conversions.  ::)

As for releasing these models I had no intention on doing so. I have just been admiring them.
As I can't get STO to load past the start menu.

Saying that other groups (from other games I won't say which, as  I do not have exact proof and it would be unfair to label other communities of asset theft) Have with very minor modifications and no hint at a read me or mention of original creators. Released these under their own names. Which is tragic.

I respect Cryptic property rights as you can clearly see the level of passion they put into these models and the inventiveness of reusing a single texture to such fantastic effect is a testament to their skills as developers.

With this i did not meen only you, this was for all who want to release them  ;)
The most STO ships released to public, for other games, have been remodels and not direct conversions  ;)

we already talked about it and we not going to touch or release the models
that's why the download links was removed from the topic

not wanting to deal with Cryptic over the models
shame not to see them come to SFC

Now everyone back to making cool models and mods :P
