Title: Opinions on StarLancer
Post by: E_Look on April 22, 2003, 11:39:26 pm
Hey, everyone, I just picked up StarLancer by Microsoft at EB for only   TWO DOLLARS    (USD), here around NYC.

To those who played it, what was it like?  Did you like it?  How does it compare to SFC, if this is a relevant question?  I have never played it.  I heard it was like Wing Commander, but that never ran right on my old 486; it was way too fast for the software!  The game moved too fast.

There is a utility you can run called Moslo that slows down the processor for those old games so that you can play them on a newer PC.

Thanks, yeah, I did try using MoSlo with it, but it really didn't work out too well... I forget why.  Anyhow, anyone have comments of StarLancer?

slow it down?  runs beautifully on my 1.8 ghz

I really enjoyed the game actually, I loved Xwing games and space combat simulators in general.  The story is weak, the enemies are a bit easy, but it's still fun!  (except for when those damned torpedo bombers dropped in.... 2 torpedoes and the cap ship dies... and when you have 6+ more of these things vectoring in on your mothership, life just sucks... has a blast radious too.. get too close and you take yourself out with the torp)

That game had what I really really wanted though, a co-op mode through every mission.  Grab a friend, grab another computer and joystick, hit the afterburners together and blow the bad guys apart in style!

just.... make sure that your friend isn't flying in front of you when you fire a missle

Good times though, I think I might have to reinstall that game

Vysander,

Are you talking about Wing Commander of StarLancer?  I just bought the latter (the former is still on some shelf in my house) and hope your compliments were about StarLancer!

I have had Starlancer for a year and a hlaf. I never got through all the missions, as it became very tiring after a while, as there are a LOT of little quirks to beat (the nasty torpedo bombers one of them). If you got it for 2 bucks, it is worth it. Great graphics, good ships, and the drawback was a Wing Commander type human interfacing, but they were computer rendered, and not very apealing.  There are several sites where you can get info, one of them is LancersReactor, where you can get a play by play description of  what you need to do to play each scenario, and you will need it, unless you want to replay everything over and over. Wing Commander Prophecy was a great game with great video, and fun scenarios. I would love to see it continued. Also there is buzz on Freelancer, spawn of sorts of StarLancer. Do a web search and review.

Vysander-

THAT'S THE ONE!

Thanks!  That's a pretty good site.  Unfortunately, my kids were watching (they play the game much, much more, really) and there were many downloads for cheats... and I didn't want them to play with cheats.  I used wonder how a little kid could whip several powerful armies in Age of Empires.  I figure that they might much more enjoy the game (StarLancer) if they played it straight up, at least initally.

After trying my hand at it, it's very different from SFC and much like Wing Commander or even a jet fighter sim (but I would love to take command of one of their capital ships, though!), but seems more playable than Wing Commander (for a clumsy newbie) and tougher than a jet fighter sim.  But as an old fogey, it still doesn't seem to beat Star Raiders (Atari)!
