I stumbled onto the site for a shareware SFB-like game, and was wondering if anyone else has tried it. The site and most links are in disrepair, so I'm stuck with just the unregistered "demo" version. I'd like to try the full version, but I don't want to risk paying for it if the developers are out of touch and the game is in limbo. Anyway, it's a fun little distraction.

There was one I played that was written by (I think) a Univ of Illinois student.
I think he gave up when SFC was released.

Yep, I remember this game too. Apparently, the developer was making a new version of it but never completed it. The second version was going to be even more customizable. You could design your own weapons and I think your own races. The only draw back though was that you could only design 5 ships per race. Not exactly a high variety of ships to choose from and I wasn't all that impressed how he designed his ship design system. I think I could have come up with a more interesting internal ship design then Fleet Combat. But overall, its not bad for a shareware game.

The link to the download for the demo doesn't appear to be working either.. I keep getting a page not found error.

Yeah, if you look into the parent directories of the locations where files used to reside, they are empty. Apparently they pulled it all down but left the site live. Word was the Fleet II demo was buggy, anyway. I'd just like to find the full version of 1.1 and the ship editor.

Some of the links on the download page will take you to a site that has the demo and apparently has the full version of the game for sale:

But, like I said, I'd be cautious about spending money if the developers are out of touch. Besides, $20 for a game that is essentially obsolete seems a bit pricey. Still, the demo of version 1.1 is entertaining.

Hey, Fleet was not a bad little game based on Visual Basic. It has all the basic concepts of SFB (a little simplified though) and is great if you want to play other people online (I think its possible to play head to head, never did it myself). Although 20 bucks might be a little high in price for this game, its not bad.

Here's the link to the game that I referred to earlier that looked promising. I guess ADB shut down further development (or maybe he graduated)
I played it. Pretty good for it's time.
